Tending The Heart Fire by Shiva Rea

January 13, 2014

Rea cover“Follow your heart” is a term that is bandied about in the modern age, shorthand for unplugging ourselves from society’s endless technological progress, and tapping into our desires, wishes, and aspirations. But how can the heart be trusted? How can we utilize this delicate organ as a tool for better living? Shiva Rea’s debut book, Tending the Heart Fire: Living in Flow with the Pulse of Life is a guide to reconnecting with our own bodies through the synthesis of Eastern philosophy and modern science. Rea delves into topics such as meditation, life guidance, seasonal rituals, and daily practices, all aimed toward teaching us how to tend our “inner fires.” Pulling from yoga and Tantra, Tending the Heart Fire employs easy-to-understand visuals, including diagrams, illustrations, reference charts, and ancient poetry.

Shiva Rea holds an M.A. in Dance from UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures Program, where she currently teaches. She is a well-known contributor to Yoga Journal and Yoga Plus Joyful Living, and has taught vinyasa flow yoga around the world. Rea is the author of award-winning CDs and DVDs, starting projects like Yoga Trance Dance for Life, the worldwide Global Mala Project, and Moving Activism for 1,008,000 Trees. A yogini firekeeper, Rea has studied yoga and dance in their many forms, in countries ranging from India to Jamaica, bringing and teaching this information to the Western world. The New York Times calls Rea, “a powerhouse yoga teacher,” and Vanity Fair hails her, “one of the world’s greatest yoga masters.”
