This past month, Paul Auster was awarded the Naples Prize, or Premio Napoli, by the Royal Palace in Naples, Italy for his 2010 New York Times bestselling novel, Sunset Park. To see a video of Auster accepting the award, click here.

Sunset Park tells the story of 28-year-old Miles, who worked in Florida cleaning out foreclosed homes before heading back to his hometown of Brooklyn when things go sour with the teenage girlfriend he leaves behind. In the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, he squats with former friends and starving artists, and gets back in touch with his estranged father, exploring the idea of reconnecting to the world he previously abandoned. The novel poignantly highlights the complexities of the housing bubble, the emotional constraints of the financial crisis, and one person’s story as he struggles through this timelessly American moment.

Sunset Park is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound.

In Butterfield’s 1995 title, the story of Willie Bosket, who was imprisoned in 1978 for committing double murder at the age of fifteen, is woven into the history of violence and racism in America, dating back to the Civil War and the slaveholding South. Dyer remarks, “The narrative of this investigative genealogy is valuable in itself…but it’s the close-up story of Willie and his father that makes the book so compelling: the constant, cliffhanging hope of the possibility of redemption matched by the attendant fear of something ever more dreadful about to be unleashed.” All God’s Children was reissued by Vintage in 2008, and is available at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and your local indie bookseller.

Martin Fletcher’s The List is the passionate love story of Edith and Georg, Austrian refugees living in London after World War II. In an overlooked period in postwar British history, Fletcher sheds light on the rise of Anti-Semitism that calls for the expulsion of refugees from the country as the Jewish couple avoids violence and abuse while spending their quiet days searching for surviving family without much luck. Expecting their first child, all Edith and Georg want is to raise their child in peace in a world that is anything but.

“The List is an elegantly written and evocative story of Holocaust survivors and what they faced after the war. Martin, always the journalist, dug into his family’s past to give us a novel that is at once instructive, darkly comic and ultimately inspiring.” –Tom Brokaw

“Extraordinary—both spellbinding and heartbreaking, with brilliantly rendered characters and a breathtaking conclusion.” –Andrea Mitchell, NBC News

“Will haunt and inspire you long after you turn the final page.” –Daniel Silva, author of Portrait of a Spy

“Extraordinary—a page turning thriller that pulls you in and won’t let go.” –Jonathan Wilson, author of A Palestine Affair

Martin Fletcher has won five Emmys, a Columbia DuPont award, and several Overseas Press club awards as a correspondent for NBC News. He was NBC News Bureau Chief in Tel Aviv for many years, and now splits his time between Israel and New York City.

The List is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Penguins may look like gentlemen, but their rampant promiscuity is uncouth, to say the least! In Animals Behaving

Badly: Boozing Bees, Cheating Chimps, Dogs with Guns, and Other Beastly True Tales, zookeeper and writer Linda Lombardi reveals some of the most shocking stories about the lower creatures since a dingo ate that baby. Who knew that kangaroos and marmosets can reach their own penis with their mouths, or that bees tend to dance more after taking cocaine? Disco is over, bees!

“This book is educational, hilarious, and it makes me wish it was legal to participate in cage fighting with an endangered species.”

- MATTHEW INMAN, creator of TheOatmeal.com and author of 5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth

“A veritable cavalcade of badly behaved beasts. I couldn’t keep my paws off it.”

- DANNY BECK, a.k.a. Sir Pilkington Smythe, esq., eversostrange.com

“Lombardi may be the anti-cute-and-fuzzy. Her book rightfully reminds us of animals’ true, often cantankerous, horny, and self-serving natures.”

- JENNIFER HOLLAND, author of Unlikely Friendships

Are you wishing for well behaved pets this holiday season- no drinking from the Christmas tree, no jumping on your mother-in-law? Well, tough. Santa’s not real. But if your gender-and-species-neutral parenting ethos requires that the pets get a present, know that dogs don’t have the sense of irony to appreciate fair isle sweaters. Instead, take Linda’s advice on holiday gifts for the animals.

Also, listen in to Linda’s interview on National Geographic Weekend with Boyd Matson. Creatures this unruly haven’t hit the radio waves since they spotted that sea monster in Lake Wobegon!

LINDA LOMBARDI grew up in the Bronx playing with plastic animals. As an adult, she gave up a tenured position as a college professor to take a zookeeping job. She has served as the pets and animals columnist for the Associated Press and authored the mystery, The Sloth’s Eye.

A Huffington Post e-book original, How We Won is legal scholar Aaron Belkin’s insider account of how the country came to see the injustice of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, and why it took so long to happen. After more than a decade of campaigning, Belkin found that the key to winning was in highlighting the fallacies from the opposing party. His story not only speaks to the virtue of equality in the armed forces, but serves as a touchstone for progressives looking to set public policy in the future.

“This is a wonderful and compelling read… Aaron Belkin did a fantastic job of illustrating the complexity of the issue and pointing out the lessons learned. Activists at all levels and areas would likely benefit greatly from this book.”

-DAVID LEVY, co-author of Echoes of Mind: Thinking Deeply
About Humanship

“How We Won is a remarkable story written from the perspective of an eminently successful scholar and public policy activist… One one page you’ll find him complementing his opposition when he found himself outplayed, and then on the next page, he critiques their strategy. By evaluating all the evidence of this epic policy reversal, he provides a deeply reflective perspective into a very complex and fascinating story.”

-JIM PARCO, former United States Air Force lieutenant colonel

AARON BELKIN is an Associate Professor of Political Science at San Francisco State University and founder and director of the Palm Center, a research institute for progressive policy which The Advocate has identified as one of the most effective gay-rights groups in the country. Prior to his arrival at SFSU, he was a MacArthur Foundation postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley and a pre-doctoral fellow at Stanford. Dr. Belkin has delivered more than 30 lectures on “don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) at military universities including West Point, the Army War College, the Air Force Academy, the Naval War College and others.

HOW WE WON is available on Apple iBooks, Google’s eBookstore, the Barnes & Noble NOOK, and the Amazon Kindle.

Suburgatory: Twisted Tales from Darkest Suburbia

By Linda Erin Keenan

After seven years in New York City as a CNN producer, Linda Keenan migrated to the land of tiger moms, breastfeeding Nazis, and frustrated swingers. This is Suburgatory, where sodded lawns and sprayed-on tans are kept immaculate but circumcision and vaccines are blasphemies against nature. In these satirical “news stories,” whose title inspired the ABC sitcom, Keenan reveals the painfully funny idiosyncracies of the upper middle class, from gourmet dog food to ironic trips to Wal-Mart. Perhaps there’s something unsettling about settling down.

“Linda Keenan is the smartest, sassiest girl you know times ten, after two shots of tequila. Her brazen, ballsy look at life in the suburbs is more than laugh out loud- Suburgatory will make you shoot milk out of your nose, then immediately re-up the lease on your townhouse in the city.”

-Karen Karbo, author of The Gospel According to Coco Chanel and How Georgia Became O’Keeffe

“What life might be like if Sarah Silverman moved to the burbs. A sexy, saucy, hilarious romp.”

-Bill Diehl, ABC Entertainment Correspondent

“‘Hilarious.’ ‘Insightful.’ ‘Genius.’ People are always saying these words to me. Now, finally, I can say them about someone else: specifically whoever wrote this book. Linda somebody.”

-Robert Carlock, Executive Producer of NBC’s 30 Rock

“Wow this book’s hilarious but it’s so edgy, blurbing it might get me in trouble.”

-Anonymous Top Network News Producer

Linda Erin Keegan spent seven years as a CNN senior producer/head-writer for top anchors including Anderson Cooper, Aaron Brown, Willow Bay, Stuart Varney, and Lou Dobbs. Before that she was at Bloomberg TV. Her first-person essays have appeared in the Boston Globe Magazine and the Huffington Post.

Suburgatory is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

His no-connection, humble beginnings pave the way for a series of gutsy career moves – one of which, in 1987 at the age of 26, lands him a start-up firm with partner Jonathan Bond that becomes the premiere ad agency within a year. Kirshenbaum writes both with quick wit and sincerity, shameless admitting to being the man behind mini-ad stickers on fruit, spray-painted campaigns on sidewalks, and Andy Warhol Pontiac campaigns.

“Kirshenbaum’s bracing, often ribald humor carries right through the page and onto the sidewalk, where he stenciled such ads as that for Bamboo Lingerie: ‘From here it looks like you could use some new underwear.’ A shimmering piece of work, in which the flash illuminates the creative act.” – Kirkus Review

“A thrilling and irreverent memoir about the transformation of the advertising business from the 1980s to today.” – Open Road Media

In Your Children are Listening: Nine messages They Need to Hear from You, psychologist/author Dr. Jim Taylor, PhD, writes that, “children become the messages they hear the most.” As a guide for parents, he provides methods to be better understood and minimize room for misinterpretation. As children grow, they integrate harmful messages from peers and popular culture. Readers will understand how to immunize that effect by promoting healthy messages of love, competence, security, compassion, gratitude, nature, respect, responsibility, and emotion to their children.

“In a world where children are surrounded by negative messages, Dr. Jim. Taylor gives parents the tools they need to effectively communicate healthy, positive messages that will infuse their children’s hearts, minds, and souls.” – Michelle LaRowe, author of A Mom’s Ultimate Book of Lists, Working Mom’s 411, and the Nanny to the Rescue! series

“Dr. Jim Taylor’s strengths are his compassionate voice, his insights into parents’ and children’s psyches, and his ‘boots on the ground’ approach to helping parents send healthy messages to their children. In a world filled with harmful messages, Your Children are Listening will resonate with all.” – Michele Borba, Ed.D., author of Parents Do Make a Difference and The Big Book of Parenting

For Immediate Release is a bold, no-nonsense case for the necessity of dynamic PR in a market where nonstop news cycles and social media have all the more impact in shaping brand perception. With examples from Whole Foods, Zappos, and Toyota, PR wunderkind Ronn Torossian of 5WPR gives an insiders account of how to shape minds and manage crises while upholding an authentic brand image. This is a must-read for businesses and public figures of all statures looking to thrive in a world where perception becomes reality. Talk isn’t cheap- it’s undervalued.

“The fact is that Mr. Ronn Torossian, brash and aggressively outspoken, is the consummate scrappy publicist.”- The New York Times

“I enjoyed reading this book so much. The foundation of so many of Ronn’s game-changing observations and direction is something we all get: LOGIC. One can conclude, ‘I couldn’t have thought of that…’ or ‘That makes sense!’” -Paul Carlucci, publisher of the New York Post

“Ronn Torossian is the best PR person I have hired. It’s impossible to believe the results his firm achieves. Whatever he can teach you is worth learning.” – Keith Ablow, M.D., Fox News contributor and New York Times bestselling author

Ronn Torossian is the founder and CEO of New York-based 5W Public Relations, a top-25 PR firm. He was named to PRWeek’s “40 under 40” list and Advertising Age’s “40 under 40” list.

For Immediate Release will be available October 18th at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, and Benbellabooks.com.
